About the course
This course is an introduction to the major aspects of socially determined language variation; in other words, it deals with how society shapes and guides our language use and our perception of our language use and that of others. During the course, examples of linguistic situations around the world will be presented and discussed. The main goal of the course is to make you think critically about linguistic practices, values and stereotypes; for example, to allow you to assess, in an enlightened way, the various claims that are made about language and language policy in the media. The course will be a mixture of lecturing, group and class discussion. Your willingness to contribute to discussion sessions is essential for the success of the course.
Sections: Sections will
take place on weeks 3, 5, 7 and 9, on Wednesdays 1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. in SOLIS
