- SLab members use Praat for for various tasks, such as
recording speech, doing speech analysis and annotation, running (some)
perceptual experiments, doing speech synthesis , scripting and signal
manipulation for experiments.
Praat was created
by Paul Boersma and David Weenink of the
Institute of Phonetics
Sciences of the University of Amsterdam. It is
distributed freely (and widely) and runs on Linux, Windows, and
Macintosh systems. SLab members have
created a variety of scripts that automate various aspects of file
management and signal measurement in Praat.

- Wavesurfer is a fantastic program for speech analysis, offering
many features that are particularly useful for teaching and class demos
(such as playing speech backwards, and changing spectrograms in real
time as the user changes the analysis parameters). Wavesurfer is also
freeware; its code is available to download and change at will. It is
distributed by the KTH Department
of Speech, Music and Hearing.
