Igbo

Igbo, or Ibo, is a language of the Niger-Congo family of languages. It is the language of the Igbo people, one of the largest ethnic groups in Nigeria, whose 15 million members occupy the bulk of Southeastern Nigeria. This language is one of the most commonly spoken in Nigeria, and is both an official language (along with English) and the language of trade in the South East. The Igbo language can be further divided into about 30 dialects of varying intelligibility. A standard literary form also exists which is based on the dialects of Owerri and Umuahia. The language is written using the Roman alphabet.
