Your first assignment is to learn how to pronounce Hangul, the writing system used for writing the Korean language. You don't have to worry about getting the pronunciation exactly right, obviously, just roughly! As explained in class, you should be looking for systematic correspondences between symbol components and the sounds they symbolize (i.e., the hockey-stick with a handle symbolizes the sound "a").
If you don't have access to the Xeroxes handed out in class, you can try to view the following jpeg images: Hangul image 1 (jpg) and Hangul image 2 (jpg). It won't work to try to look at them in your browser, you have to print them. Be warned that the scanned images are large (> 1 MB), so it would take a long time to download them over a modem connection---better to view or print them at school. Or you can get one the same way I did: go to 4344 Convoy Street to the Seoul B.B.Q. Restaurant and ask for a take-out menu! If you have trouble with any of these methods, email the TA s or me (barker@ucsd.edu).
When you're satisfied that you have a good basic understanding of most of the symbol-sound correspondences, you'll be ready to take the first on-line quiz, which is labelled "Hangul": from the main class web page, click on "Assignments and Assessments", then click on "Hangul".
