LIGN 120: Morphology

Midterm Review Sections

Midterm review sections will be held by the TAs this Friday and next Monday. Come ask questions and go over your old homeworks to prepare for the midterm problems. David (the TA) has also written some practice problems so you can test yourself on how prepared you are for the midterm. The problem set is here. Try to do it on your own, and then you can check your answers here.

Times & Locations:
David:
Friday (the 23rd), 2-2:50 Solis Hall 111

Course Overview

  • There will be problem sets due every class period. Discussion of the problem sets during class is the main component of the course.
  • There will be a take-home midterm and final which will form the basis of your grade. When determining final grades at the end of the course, homework and class participation will be used to make decisions on cases that are on the border between two grades.
  • You should know how to use phonetic symbols for transcription. If you took 101, 110, or 111, that should be sufficent background. There will be review sections during the first two weeks for anyone who wants to brush up on their phonetic knowledge. (see below for times and locations)

Problem Set Guidelines

  • Problem sets will be turned in at the beginning of the class period that they are due
  • It's probably a good idea to make a copy of your assignment so you have something to refer to during class discussion.
  • Problems build on each other and get progressively harder throughout the quarter. It is therefore very important that you do all the problems and keep up with the pace of the course.
  • Problems will be graded with: plus (above average), check (average), and minus (below average).
  • The goal of the problem sets is to help you learn how to find patterns in the data and propose explicit solutions to account for them. Therefore, it does you no good to get the answers from a friend, because you will not learn what you need to learn to pass the course. Do the work on your own.

    Late Homework Policy

All homework handed out before the midterm (i.e. up to and including the homework handed out on Thursday, April 22nd) must be turned in by Tuesday, April 27th to receive credit. Late homework will be graded check or minus, with no option of recieving a plus, since if you're turning it in late you had the chance to get the right answer in class. The Midterm problems cannot be handed in late without special permission from the professor.

Online Resources

The IPA Website has the full chart (look under quick links) and some general information on the IPA.

IPA fonts You'll probably do your problem sets by hand, since that's easiest, but if there's some of you out there who like to type everything up, these fonts will help you get all the right characters.
